"Wake up to bird song
in the heart of
the Cairngorms National Park"
Woodhead Cottage is a purpose-built, fully accessible, self-catering, holiday cottage for physically disabled people, situated a short distance outside the village of Dulnain Bridge, in the Scottish Highlands.
The cottage is fully adapted for wheelchair users and other forms of physical disability. The accommodation comprises three bedrooms sleeping a total of six people. The main bedroom has twin beds and the other two bedrooms have a double bed and bunk beds respectively.
The twin beds in the main bedroom are both electrically adjustable - see the pictures in the Photo Gallery - and there is an electric, tracking hoist which can take you directly from either bed all the way to the bath in the ensuite bathroom.
PLEASE NOTE: If you expect to need to use the hoist during your stay it is strongly recommended that you bring your own slings to use with it, since everyone's requirements are different in this regard..
The kitchen is designed to be easily accessible to wheelchair users and features a lowered ceramic hob, with knee space beneath, and a separate, built-in, fan-assisted oven. A fridge, dishwasher, microwave oven and a washing machine are all included. The cottage has a tumble dryer which is located in the bunk bedroom.
The living room is well equipped to make you feel at home. There is a television and video and a mini hi-fi system for those quiet nights in, with a small choice of videos and CD's already supplied. There is a coal effect electric fire as well as electric storage heating and, as you can see from the pictures in the Photo Gallery, it is a very comfortable room.
The bathroom has a wet floor shower as well as a bath. A shower wheelchair is provided and there are full handrails for the toilet, bath and shower. The wash-hand basin is extended to provide knee space for wheelchair users.
Just outside the cottage there is a wide variety of wildlife to discover, from Red Squirrels to Roe Deer! Of course some are rarer than others but just outside one of the kitchen windows there are bird feeders which attract all sorts of small feathered friends including a variety of Finches and Tits.
Jackdaws and Rooks appear regularly and Collared Doves and Greater Spotted Woodpeckers occasionally visit. Red Squirrels are also visitors to the feeders though, sadly, they are becoming increasingly rare. There are Tawny Owls to be heard in the surrounding woods and Roe Deer sometimes pass by the cottage. There is even a circular woodland walk with a concrete surfaced path so that wheelchair users, and people who need to use all kinds of walking aids, can enjoy a walk in the woods.
Woodhead Cottage was built by Ian and Catriona Shearer, a local Speyside couple and stands in the grounds of their own house. However there is plenty of space and since shrubs and trees separate both houses privacy is assured - see the Ground Plan.
Choosing a holiday cottage is always difficult, especially so if you are disabled and need to be confident beforehand about access and suitability. This website aims to give you a complete picture of the cottage and information on How To Book it. You'll also find out How To Get Here and, on the 'Local Information' page, things you might do during your stay.
